Amazon founder Jeff Bezos takes the throne on Forbes’ The World’s Billionaires 2018 list, bumping off former richest man Microsoft’s Bill Gates to second place.
The 52-year-old magnate has a net worth of $112 billion, surpassing Gates’ $90 billion. According to Forbes, Bezos “is the first person to top $100 billion as number one” on the said list.
The gap between the two tycoons’ net worth is the biggest since 2001, the business magazine said in its site.
A summa cum laude graduate of computer science and electrical engineering from Princeton University, Bezos quit his corporate job to establish Amazon.com which started out as a “virtual bookstore”, according to Biography. It was first set up in a garage in Seattle in 1994, added Forbes.
Forbes said that he currently owns 16% of Amazon and stands as its chief executive officer. He also owns aerospace company Blue Origin, and acquired The Washington Post in 2013.
Bezos has also been given the same recognition by Bloomberg, according to The Economic Times.
In the Philippines, mall mogul Henry Sy remains as the country’s wealthiest billionaire, landing at the 52nd rank at the Forbes world list with a net worth of $20 billion, noted ABS-CBN News.
Sy has been leading the Philippines Rich List for 10 straight years, said Forbes, as of the 2017 version of the roll.
