Ramon Ang is a name you’d usually hear when it comes to the Philippines’ biggest and richest business personalities.
After all, he is the current president and COO of huge conglomerate San Miguel Corporation (SMC), under which many other businesses are housed, such as Petron Corporation and Purefoods.
To add to that, he was listed as the Philippines’ 10th richest person of 2017 by Forbes.
But more than that, who is Ramon Ang and what inspiration can aspiring entrepreneurs draw from him?
Behind every successful business person are humble beginnings, too, as success does not come without hard work.
Here are some facts you might not know about this tycoon:
1) Starting with the basics, Ang earned his BS Mechanical Engineering degree from the Far Eastern University, according to a Town&Country Philippines article. The institution is also the alma mater of fellow tycoons such as Henry Sy and Lucio Tan.
2) In an Inquirer.net article from 2012, it was mentioned that Ang was “frequently mislabelled by friends and critics alike as having started out as an ‘auto mechanic’”, when in fact, he began by buying, revamping, and afterwards, selling Japan surplus car engines in the 1970s.
3) The same report also mentioned that since 2007 when he took charge as president of SMC, Ang led the company to investing in “in fields where it had no prior experience”. “When we started to diversify, people said I was crazy”, he earlier told Inquirer.
Amidst doubts, the move took the company to even greater heights. “But when you look at how far we’ve come today, do you think we made the right move or not?”, he asked his interviewers.
4) Just recently, September of last year, SMC chose to leave the plastic bottled water business. “ The plastic bottled water business has given us good returns, but we are choosing to forego it in favor of our long-term sustainability goals”, Ang said in a statement, in a report by BusinessWorld.
