Amidst the hustle and bustle, sometimes, a piece of home is all you need.
And it doesn’t have to be far from what you do.
Venture into Hukad, a homegrown restaurant chain renown in Visayas and Mindanao for their signature Cebuano and Filipino dishes.
Literally meaning “to serve up food on one’s plate” in Bisaya, the brand fuses the warm taste of its roots with their strong potential in the competitive food business.
Hukad, owned by Golden Cowrie Franchising, Inc., dates its rich flavor from 1982, when the first Golden Cowrie began to serve customers in Lahug, Cebu City. It was in 2009, however, that the label Hukad, also meaning “ladle”, was born when the company decided to franchise.
Indeed, to bring a touch of Cebu to other parts of the Philippines and the rest of the world is a goal of Hukad. Aside from its Filipino “comfort food” menu with a Cebuano twist, its restaurants are also laden with crafted native interiors by Cebu designer Hannah Lim.
Hukad also serves regional dishes from heritage recipes that seem “forgotten” but are just as good, and that’s what makes this Filipino restaurant unique, Assistant General Manager Kristine R. Kokseng said in their press launch, Thursday evening.
With over 40 branches nationwide, the restaurant now begins to satisfy taste buds in Luzon and Metro Manila.
In a brief interview with Selfmade, Hukad and Golden Cowrie General Manager Kenneth C. Kokseng said they are aiming to reach all key malls in the capital region after conquering major cities in Visayas and Mindanao. They are also hoping to go international afterward.
When asked about Hukad’s secret to success, he shared that it’s all about hard work and finding the right partners, though it may seem very cliché.
“It’s not just in Hukad or a restaurant, I think in all types of businesses you’re on a scale. You’re only up to a certain limit that you can do it yourself. You’ll need to tap the people who share the same vision as you,” according to Mr. Kokseng.
He also shared a piece of advice for aspiring business people: “I think you should be passionate about it. You should have a vision, have a dream, then work hard and go for it. I think it starts with a dream and with a passion. Everything will follow”.
Hukad held its Metro Manila press launch last Thursday, November 9 at its Trinoma branch with celebrity endorser Gerald Anderson who is also a Bisaya.
Signature dishes include the famous Crispy Pata, which won People’s Choice in Sun Star’s Best of Cebu Awards, and the Lechon Belly de Cebu, as well as appetizers Pomelo Salad and Baked Bantayan Scallops. To complete the Filipino meal, Hukad serves unlimited rice.
Filipino desserts such as the Ube Halaya Crisp a la Mode are also part of the menu.
Their Metro Manila branches are located in SM Mall of Asia, SM BF Paranaque, SM Sucat, SM Bicutan, SM San Lazaro, Trinoma, S Maison, and Ayala Malls Cloverleaf.
Visayas and Mindanao locations include Dumaguete, Tacloban, Iloilo, Davao, Tagum, and Cebu, among other major cities.
